        "Navigating Maryland Paid Sick Leave and Related Laws – What We’ve Learned One Year In”

Presented by Matthew Helminiak, Commissioner of Labor & Industry, Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation and Douglas Desmarais, Esq, Smith & Downey, P.A.*due to a schedule change Secretary Kelly Schulz will no longer be presenting


The Maryland Healthy Working Families Act (“MHWFA”) went into effect in February 2018, requiring all Maryland employers to provide their employees with sick and safe leave—which in most cases, must be paid. Close to a year later, employers are still struggling to understand the nuances and complexities of the law. Moreover, adherence to the often-confusing MHWFA is only the start of full compliance with applicable federal and state laws that govern sick and safe leave-related events. In his keynote address, Commissioner Helminiak will share the Maryland DLLR’s most recent guidance and enforcement actions related to the MHWFA. Attorney Doug Desmarais will then guide attendees through the legal maze of interrelated laws. This presentation will include a Q&A session with Commissioner Helminiak and Mr. Desmarais




           "Understanding Maryland’s New Employment Laws"

The 2018 session of the Maryland legislature was a particularly busy one! This session will assist HR practitioners in understanding the new Maryland employment laws, including the onerous sexual harassment disclosure law and its impact on employment agreements and policies, the new law imposing strict liability on general contractors for subcontractors’ wage and hour violations, and more, with a preview of the 2019 legislative session. Attendees will learn what important updates they may have missed while scrambling to get their paid sick leave policies in place!

Attendees will learn how to take proactive steps to build and protect their social media presence and reputation while staying compliant with laws governing the workplace.
