Following the presentation we will begin our education program focused on unconscious bias.

We’ve all done it - we see someone we don’t know and we size them up. Clothing, hair style, accent, age…we make a judgement based on nothing more than our personal and often random assumptions. It’s likely that in our lifetime, we have actually made these assumptions and then had time to get to know the person, only to find that we were way off base in our assumptions. Proven wrong, one would think that would be a lesson learned that we wouldn’t make again, but unfortunately, that’s not how the brain works. For some reason, humans naturally label, categorize and pre-judge others with very few facts on board.

This discussion is aimed at helping us identify our blind spots when it comes to people or groups who are different from us. Making snap judgments is a universal phenomenon - no one can avoid the impact and influence of the decades of messages, innuendo, and stereotypes to which we have been exposed - but we can do our best not to act on them. For this session, our goal is to engage in respectful, honest, and productive conversation that will help us identify the role we play in either furthering or dismantling instances of unconscious bias around us. In addition, we will discuss ways to address behaviors that may stem from biases others are not even aware that they hold.

Bettina Straight is the Organizational Development Consultant at Mercy Medical Center. She holds a B.A. in Sociology, an M.S. in Student Personnel Administration and has been training on various leadership and diversity topics for over 20 years. Having worked in higher education and healthcare, Bettina has years of eye witness experience watching people struggle to relate to one another in an open, honest way. As a trainer, her goal is to help participants see a subject from a new perspective, to engage them in respectful, honest, and productive conversation, and to leave them with a sense of connectedness and new understanding. Her areas of interest include "Unconscious Bias", "Working Across Generations", and "Leading with Values".
