About the Presentations

"Markets He Wrote: What Low Unemployment and Large Numbers of Job Openings Mean for Human Resource Professionals"
presented by Anirban Basu, JD

Back by popular demand, Anirban Basu will discuss the extent to which Americans are benefiting from the ongoing economic expansion, now in its ninth year.  Anirban's firm is Sage Policy Group, Inc., an economic and policy consultancy he founded in 2004.  The company has clients in more than forty states and in six nations.  In addition to his work at Sage, Anirban lectures at Johns Hopkins in Global Strategy.  He has provided consulting to many non-profit and government human services providers during his quarter century career, including to the West Baltimore-based Center for Urban Families, the Maryland Department of Human Resources, and human services providers from around the nation.  His presentation will speak to labor markets, financial markets, energy markets, real estate markets, and other markets that help shape our collective well-being.

“Take Back Control? Tackling the Toughest Leave Management Issues”

presented by Donna M. Glover, JD and Jennifer L. Curry, JD

While the FMLA and the ADA have been in play for many years, recent developments in the courts and at the agencies, and at the state level (paid sick leave; mandatory leave laws; mini-FMLAs) create the need for Human Resources professionals to possess the knowledge and insight to handle increasingly challenging leave management issues in the workplace. Companies want to curb abuse, but HR practitioners may be individually sued under the FMLA if they get it wrong. This session tackles the toughest leave management issues. HR practitioners will be tested on those issues and walk away from the session with a three-step model to analyze any leave problem, including, FMLA eligibility and designation issues, FMLA abuse issues, return to work issues, and ADA extended leave issues.

“Workers’ Compensation Update: How to Implement a Successful Return to Work Program”
presented by Sherryl A. Tirocchi, JD

This informative session will provide a comprehensive update of workers’ compensation issues, including a focus on implementing an effective return-to-work program.  HR practitioners will receive up-to-date information regarding workers’ compensation reporting requirements and recent changes in the law in Maryland and surrounding jurisdictions. Understanding reporting requirements is the key to ensuring that employers are meeting their legal obligations when reporting workers’ compensation claims.  The session will also focus on the legalities of Return to Work Programs under the workers’ compensation statutes and the interplay with employment leaves of absence.

“Closing the Gap: Strategies for Managing Pay Equity”
presented by Suzanne Keys, SPHR, SHRM-SCP

Judging from recent developments and cases publicized by Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), these agencies show no signs of letting up on their commitment to enforce fair pay laws. Given the heightened enforcement, monitoring and promoting pay equity is both the right thing to do, and a business imperative for companies looking to remain compliant, and compete in today’s marketplace.  During this session, attendees will learn about federal and Maryland state laws that govern fair pay, their coinciding compensation data reporting requirements, and the impact these laws have on employers. The presenter will also discuss key components of a proactive analysis of compensation data, the steps to take to correct inequities and overcome pay equity challenges, and how to integrate pay analysis into annual HR agendas.

“What Keeps HR Up at Night and What to Do About It”
presented by Christine Walters, JD, MAS, SHRM-SCP, SPHR

This program will add to the HR Professional’s Body of Knowledge by reviewing ten top legislative (and regulatory) trends impacting HR and employment policies and practices, including tips for engaging in advocacy to help shape these important public policy issues. At the conclusion of this interactive program participants will be able to: (1) name and describe at least three current legislation trends impacting HR and employment practices; (2) compare and contrast the pros and cons for these trends; and (3) describe YOUR business case that supports YOUR organization’s position statement.
